Samsoe's landscape has hardly changed since the time of the Vikings and their presence is strongly felt through the coastal features. This painting was made at the high ground on the centre of the island, looking east. I found the chequerboard green and yellow fields fascinating and tried to reproduce the simplicity and repetitiveness without too much fuss, contrasting the red roofs of modern houses and farms. The lighthouse in the middle focuses the view.
