Great portrait. I would like to know more about this painting - Acrylic? What were the source pictures - black and white? which tribe? Why did you paint it?

Hi Linda,This is an oil painting and it was done for my cousin who is very much into the whole Native American culture. I recently did a picture of my wifes Cherokee ancestor for her and she requested me to do this one. He is the Columbian River Salish Chief Moses, who ruled from 1801 to 1811.The two hands on the blanket represent slaying a warrior in single hand combat,(which he did as a teenager.)The two circles represent bullet wounds to his horses. The horns on the Chief and the horse are made from dried buffalow tails to denote aggressive attack,(a bull always holds his tail erect when charging. The vertical striped Navajo Chief blanket was probably a trade.
