February Forum Challenge

Meant to add, but ran out of space, that nearly all my watercolours are Daniel Smith and I love them, just not this one!

I like your jagged abstract, Jenny.

My Lapis is oil paint and a gorgeous blue Jenny, I’ve not tried the watercolour version. Great idea for the challenge.

I really like what you have created. It's very eye catching.

This is super Jenny, I like the shards of ice theme against the textured background. I have to say I’m not impressed with the Lap/Laz colour, I agree with you.

Great idea for the challenge Jenny, I know you’re not impressed with the paint but the effect is very effective.

Thanks very much Marjorie, Alan, Denise, Fiona and Katy! I had wanted to use salt in the background for a frosted effect, but it didn’t work with this paint so used cling film instead.

That's a great abstracted interpretation of the February challenge Jenny.

Many thanks George, much appreciated.

One word. Impressive,

Thank you, Diane and Richard!

I do like this Jenny very innovative. Daniel smith Primatek do seem to have loads of gum in them! Very subtle colours aren’t they? I have pushed the boat out and ordered their Kyanite, it is a bit sparkly and looks ok colour so we will see!

Thanks, Carole! I do have another DS Primatek - Mayan Blue Genuine - it’s a beautiful blue, is a joy to use and has become one of my favourite colours. Don’t know Kyanite - look forward to seeing what you produce with it. Did you get the DS translucent colours you mentioned earlier? I find they’re lovely to look at ‘in the flesh’ but don’t photograph very well.

A super piece of technical painting with precise edges. Looks good.

Hi Jenny, I did get the iridescent colours in 5ml as I don’t think I’ll use them much but they are nice. Have used as glaze and alone with good effect. I wondered about the Mayan blue, I’ll have to save up again now 😊. I’ll let you know what kyanite is like...

Carole, I mentioned translucent DS colours in my comment above - meant to say iridescent!

Many thanks Dennis and Frank!

As everyone seems to be talking about Lapis Lazuli at the moment and I had a tube of it, thought I’d use it for the challenge. It’s a (very expensive) Daniel Smith watercolour (Lapis Lazuli Genuine) in their Primatek range - and is quite horrible to use! It doesn’t flow like most watercolours but is very greasy and almost like using neat Gum Arabic. I was going to put more colour on this but trying to add more colour tends to lift the previous layer - so decided to leave it as it is.

I paint mainly in watercolour, often including other media such as pen and ink, pastel or collage. My main interest is in colour and design and most of my work is quite stylised and often illustrative. I enjoy experimenting with acrylic inks, particularly using cling film to create texture, and…
