‘Revolution’

The events acting as or leading to the development of this song was the student uprising in France where a massive strike and resultant riots led to the collapse of the government led by Charles DeGaulle. Also the violence of the Vietnam War and the assassination of Martin Luther King. In that time, following the hippy era, many carried Chairman Mao’s communist ‘little red book’ more as a fashion statement than a serious political philosophy. Initially some saw Mao’s idea of a cultural revolution, purging society of its non-progressive elements as providing a model for social change and raising living standards in China as a good thing; as did Lennon initially not knowing of how this administration would lead to millions of deaths. At one point Lennon stated ‘true revolution is not based on hatred and destruction. Revolution begins with a change in yourself away from violence and towards peace’. The lyrics I’ve used demonstrate how linguistically he developed the song using a suffix to increase the action or result of a verb. Nowadays these lyrics would be used by a rap artist.

Definitely food for thought there Spencer, and very well done.

Very interesting, Spencer - food for thought!! Very well done!

Perfect Spencer. As a life long Beatle Anorak I'm enjoying your journey very much. Mind you their catalogue is very broad in taste and styles and look forward to your next one.

Interesting picture Spencer, nicely done, get well soon mate 🙂

Thank you for your great comments Tessa, David, Chris and Stephen. Much appreciated. I have to say a great deal of thought had to go into how best to interpret the lyrics.

Very well done Spencer, and best wishes to you

Wishing you all the best of health after your operation Spencer.

Stark and strong image. Great job Spencer Wishing you a speedy recovery from your op

Thank you so much for your kind words Cheryl, Chris, Heather and Martin. I really do appreciate your comments.

A useful insight to a Beatles' song that I happen to like. I hope your health improves now. May I suggest another Beatles song for you to interpret Spencer: 'Paperback Writer' (one of my favourites) – a song referencing the relentless commercial pressure on authors.

Thanks very much for your kind words Trevor. If you look back in my gallery you will find my interpretation of ‘Paperback Writer’.

Not been able to do much art work recently as have had a heart operation so finishing off things I’ve previously started. Continuing my Beatles theme is ‘Revolution’ written in 1968 by John Lennon following a range of social and cultural changes across the world in the 1960s. This was the Beatles first protest song but the same lyrics could be used by a rap artist of the present time. The only named event/person in the lyrics was Chairman Mao.

Decades ago I trained as a Primary School teacher with art and design as one of my subjects but textiles was my main area of work. I enjoy painting and drawing but am…
