I like the 3 boats in the front. I like the men and the flag as well as the fishermen's stuff on the wharf.I guess that you are looking across to Shaldon, and that is good. The light coming over the hill and play after is good. Ropes and foreground all good. but I am left confused about the red boat. Am I looking at the front or the back of it? Is it in our out of the water? Is the dark bit below, the shadow, reflection or hull out of the water or even another boat. I'm sure it can be fixed quite easily. If the dark bit is the reflection then some pale watery lines, could break up the hard line around it. It could be a bit redder. the white line, I presume is the line where the hull meets the water. This should stop drooping to the left once it passes the centre of the hull and start going up. Hope this helps - from a fellow Devonian.

It's a lovely attempt Alan but yes, that red boat...fix it and it'll turn into a lovely piece.

Thank you Linda and Henry for your constructive comments. The red boat is beached at a slightly odd angle against the quayside. It has a very bulbous hulll and is seen head on from a low angle in extreme foreshortening. I am happy that the overall shape of the boat is not too far from the truth, I was however never happy that I had portrayed it's bulk and detail convincingly . Obviously borne out by your comments. I think I have also failed to to control the tones and detail within the boat and also in the wet sand that it sits on. Many thanks for taking the time to add your comments. Must try harder!

Very nice harbours scene Barry. I must admit I read the lower part of the large boat as a separate, smaller craft, beached on the sand.

Thank you Stephen.....obviously needs work....

I like this work and I read the red boat as beached immediately. Have seen similar scenes here on the East coast, more yachts than fishing boats now, though ! I do agree that the white watermark-line draws the eye somewhat, but still far better than I could do.... Regards from an exiled Devonian.

Thank you James for your comment. The red boat is a Teignmouth registered small trawler (TH 181) "Propitipous". I last saw it in August last year working out of Brixham.

Oil on board 10” x 14” This is a re-working of a composition that I painted in 2012 (in this portfolio) . I was never completely happy with the original, still not sure that I've nailed it......
