Michael Atchison - cartoonist

Hi Gerhard. These are wonderful portraits, and of the eight so far in your gallery, this has to be my favourite! You manage to get plenty of character in your work and you work the light well. Your subjects are fantastic - all the best for future painting.

Thanks Shayne - it's all in the subjects of course - as painters we can only hope to capture some of their essence.

What more can I say. Sheer professionalism. And I think Michael Atchison would have been a delight to know. What a fantastic expression too. I often think I might try a portrait one day, but then I see work like yours, and I stick with landscape! Regards John

oil on canvas 140cm x 110cm. Michael was for many years the daily cartoonist for the Adelaide Advertiser (1960's to 2007). He developed his skills for some years contributing to Punch and other publications before taking over the role in Adelaide after Pat Oliphant won an international competition to become cartoonist for the Denver Post. Even as I painted him Michael was bravely fighting the illness that eventually took his life in 2009.
