Whether because this is enlarged too much from the actual size, which has caused these spots of thin ultramarine paint to stand out, or for some other reason, I'm finding them a bit obtrusive - this has happened to me in the past: the painting looked fine until a certain light hit it and the blue shone out: far from unifying the painting, as you might expect it to do, it distracts the eye and atomizes the picture. This is especially so when you've used a lot of water or medium with the paint, which then lacks the body to compensate. Maybe a warmer colour - burnt sienna is commonly employed, as of course you know, would have been less troubling to my eyes....

But I still like the painting; the composition, the drawing, the lead in to the picture plane, the lack of clutter, are all good.

Lovely, impressionist style George.

Wonderful simple composition and tonal values. I think the blue showing through may be the underpainting, it is just a little bright, I think it needs toning down a touch or switch to another colour, my choice would be raw sienna.
Otherwise, fabulous, well done George.

Thank you all for your very welcome comments. A quick word about the blues in the painting. Over the last thirty years I have used various colours to under paint, ranging from the more normal sienna's and umbers to just plain old charcoal. Several years ago I decided the colour for me was Ultramarine. I draw with this directly onto the support and then when dry I block all the picture in using the same colour in different tones. I find that this gives me something to fight against when painting. I also find the blue colour to be the most interesting to me personally. After this blocking in I proceed to add colour that I think are needed until I think I have done enough to call it finished to my satisfaction. Reflecting on the comments by Robert and Alan I believe I may have called an end to this one to early hence the predominance of blue. I shall leave this painting as is but do another of the same scene to take it further. Thanks for your comments Robert and Alan, I appreciate it.
