Background is just right, Jane. It brings out the figures without overwhelming them. I like the spontaneous of your freer style and look forward to seeing more.

I totally agree with Seok - as for comments well we all work differently but I like to add a few darks by way of contrast to help a picture glow. In this case I would try a little dark (but not too much) under the red scarf, along the inside of one leg on each lady and under the ladies tops to indicate a little shadow. Just my thoughts...............

Many thanks, Michael, for your suggestions, which I will implement this afternoon. I can see why you made them - there isn't much difference in tone at the moment, and I suppose that's because I was afraid to be too heavyhanded; it's getting the balance right that takes practice - and guidance from the more experienced such as yourself. Your input is much appreciated.

Super loose painting. I agree with comments above that the painting is very much in the mid tone and could possibly benefit for a little more emphasis here and there. Lovely all the same.

Jane this is a lovely painting and I agree with Seok and Michael re the background...it's just enough, in fact the colour around the white headscarf on the left really makes it stand out.

Thea and Fiona, thank you both for taking the time to comment. Thea, I can see that greater tonal differences will improve this, and thanks Fiona for the comment on the background. It's so good to have such helpful support. On with the next one now...

I think it's difficult to get the shadows just right without overdoing it and losing the spontanaiety. I think you have captured something very interesting in a great way - love it.

Agree, lovely look to this

12" x 9" Another attempt to use watercolours more freely. I painted the ladies first then couldn't decide about the background; I felt they needed to be anchored somehow but now I'm not sure whether there's too much background, not enough or should I perhaps have just left them surrounded by white paper. Suggestions/advice/comments appreciated.
