Yippee, I'm the first to comment on this one, usually I'm at the coo's tail LOL Well you've have definitely succeeded in getting the cold and dreary atmosphere but the painting is anything but dreary. Lovely depiction of the snow, great recession with the burn and fence posts, and lovely blues giving a real feeling of cold with the little touches of sienna grasses to warm it up. A super painting Fiona.

It is a very atmospheric painting Fiona, as Val says not dreary at all but very evocative of a cold winters afternoon in the highlands.

This is a great painting - and you used artistic licence. Excellent atmosphere, one which is definitely cold and unforgiving.

This is really lovely Fiona (and not a windmill in sight!!) and there is certainly nothing dreary about it. It is most definitely cold and wintry and I love the colours you have used.

Nice one Fiona, I particularly like the sky. Perhaps you could lift a little colour off the left hand side of the nearer posts to fit in with the shadows?

Yes you certainly made it look cold Fiona! A lovely scene, great watercolour.

You were struggling with your sunset sky & clouds but this sky is absolutely wonderful, so cold over the sea. The colour of the cloud is just right and I love the shape of it. Well done Fiona!

You've beaten me to it - must do a winter scene for christmas - only hope its half as good as this - just love the simplicity of it.

Never the 'coo's tail' Val, your opinion is always valued whether it's the first or last....thank you! That was the feeling I was after Christine, a cold winter's day in the Highlands, thank you for saying so. Thank you very much Gudrun, much appreciated. Thank you Carol, I would tell you what the colours are but a very kind chap gave me a pocket paint box and I haven't a clue what the colours are, I'm guessing that the main colour is paynes grey....?

Thanks for the tip Stephen, it hadn't occured to me to do that and it makes sense to show the light source on that side. Thank you. Many thanks Carole, Satu and Michael for your lovely comments. Michael you've got six weeks and yours will be much better than this!!

I certainly don't think the painting looks dreary, but it does have the atmosphere you were aiming for. Very good composition which leads the eye in and although there is a lot of white, there is also lots of interest in the different tones you have used.

A lovely scene even if it looks bitterly cold! The very dark blue does the trick - I like this a lot.

Thank you Thea and Avril. I very nearly didn't post it.....I didn't think it was very good.....even worse than my normal attempts! Lol! Thanks again.

A lovely wintery scene, the feeling of cold shows through.

Hi Fiona. Stephen has said exactly what I was going to say about showing some light on the left hand side of the first two or three posts. It will give them substance and bring them forward. But I left it this late so that I did not upset your other followers with my usual criticism! Leave the bottom of the posts dark - in the shadow of the grasses - and let the wire strands show across the light areas.

Many thanks Glennis, hope you're well. Hi Lionel, how's your painting coming on? I took Stephens advise and have lifted a little colour from the posts and it's much better. I'll make sure the wire looks okay...didn't check that. Don't stop criticising Lionel......it makes a difference!

Lovely watercolour. The shadows of the fence posts and the contrasting bits of grass in warm colours certainly add to the friendly atmosphere.

Thank you very much Pat, I've altered it a little, just taking some of the colour our on the posts, an improvement I think.

Nearly missed this one Fiona. Very nice indeed :)

Thank you sarah!

A very lovely, atmospheric piece, Fiona - I love the stillness of the scene and the dark foreboding sky.

Sorry, another snow one.....this is the burn which has been the subject of my last two postings. This is where it leaves the Loch and flows into the sea. Taken from a photo I took winter 2010/11. The colours in the photo are late afternoon winter pinks and blues but I wanted it to feel like a cold, dreary late afternoon in winter. Hope I've managed to get a little bit of that atmosphere into it. Thanks for looking.
