Fiona Nothing wrong with the format or the shubbery. I would however strengthen the tonal differences at the top left and right where the castle sits against the background mountainside (yellow ochre areas). Darken the mountain locally in these areas to give a positive/negative effect. I think this would really make it sing. Otherwise a really nice painting with a great wintery feal to it.

Lovely wintery scene, I like the foreground against the beautiful colours in the water. The warmth of the stone against the cool tones of the snow. A lovely painting Fiona, well done.

Although I never do oil paintings, Fiona, this looks very good to me. I like the format but I have a question, did you make the foreground grasses that low or is it due to the photo. Maybe a bit higher they would add to the depth in the painting. But this is my opinion. Nevertheless, well done!

I love the way you captured the feeling of intense cold. The vast mountain behind the ruins is quite spectacular! A great painting. I have looked at your sketch too - I prefer this landscape format to the portrait.

I think this is a nice painting Fiona, I know very little about oil painting but it works for me!

Well done Fiona. It all looks good to me. Very, very cold as well :)

Nice one Fiona. Well done.

Many thanks everyone, really appreciate your comments and advise.

Love the brushwork in this one, Fiona - it's spontaneous and very expressive. A lovely piece.

Thank you Seok, I'm very grateful for your imput.

I really like this Fiona, especially the water and the lovely blue in the mountains.

Thanks very much Val for taking a look and commenting.

I posted a pen & wash of this subject a few days ago, which I did as a practise for this oil. It's nothing like the practise run!! The original photo is a snow scene, (kind permission of Pam MacKenzie) the shrubbery on the left of the castle doesn't exist but there was a huge expanse of nothing, so had to put something in. I perhaps should have done it in portrait format like the practise pen sketch. Not altogether sure it works; too much hillside, not enough water, wrong format? Any ideas would be most welcome. Thank you for taking a look.
