Sorry, Fiona, but whilst this is a delightful sketch by itself, now that I have seen it with the washes I prefer the one with the watercolours. Compare, for example, the treatment of the sky with washes and then without. Similarly, the gable wall of the ruin. I'm probably being unfair with such a comparison but, nevertheless, that's how I feel. It will be interesting to see the opinions of others.

Fiona, I also prefer the one with the washes, although there's much to be said for the simplicity of this one. Somehow the ink conjures up the sadness of the ruin better - but still prefer it with colour.

I suppose it's just up to personal taste/preference, I think I side with you and like the contrast of the deep richness and strength of the ink against the pure white of the paper. I felt the same with Michael's tree sketch, I look forward to seeing his completed work. I think we often dismiss pure drawing in favour of colour and paint.

I also prefer the one with the washes - although this is equally a good drawing.

the dilemma is, having done an ink drawing, should you then proceed by adding washes, well both versions of this are great Fiona and stand in their own right

Thanks everyone for your comments, it's interesting to see the differences of our tastes. I very nearly didn't add watercolour because I thought I would ruin a fairly good drawing....for me. Thanks again.

I know what you mean Fiona with your own thoughts about preserving this crisp sketch which I like a lot , but on balance think I prefer the one with the washes added, but this is still a nice piece of drawing.

Thank you very much Graham.

I agree with the above comments, Fiona. They are both very, very good but... I also prefer the one with the washes. This one is a super drawing and it is a pitty you couldn't keep them both. In the one with the washes, I especially like the watersoluble ink accents!

Thank you Mia, I too like the effect of the soluable ink.

Love this, Fiona - love the strong lines and the crisp atmosphere! And I love your experimentation with different media - they are adventurous and original, and all bear your imprint.

This is the ink sketch of 'Somerset Ruin' before I added the Watercolour washes. I think I prefer the crispness of the this sketch. As with Stephen & Michaels latest postings, done with a piece of stick.
