This was a bit of departure for me... but I really wanted to paint a portrait as a gift for my father-in-law of his mother. She is an extraordinary woman who was a debutante in the late 30's, worked in radar during world war two, regularly climbing up 300' towers to fix things; was a champion showjumper in Kenya in the 50s and 60s and is continuing to inspire (and slightly terrify) her grandchildren into her 90's. I was fascinated with the amount of different colours in her skin and the translucence of it. (I really only paint people under 12 if I can help it!) I wanted to make her look 90 and beautiful at the same time.
