Hello Mic, I admire your enthusiasm, keep it up & remember every great artist was a beginner to start with! I am a bit reluctant to offer advice as I have only just started using charcoal myself & have never been taught how to do it 'properly' but I am enjoying it a lot. (you can find my efforts in the gallery) I find it a bit of a blunt instrument - most suited to a simple image - I get lots of charcoal on the paper and then it becomes a bit like finger painting & you can soften, smudge, dapple etc & get lots of texture just with fingers & lift out highlights with your putty rubber. Good luck & enjoy yourself

Charcoal drawing of the moon setting in the horizon over the sea. I like the reflection work but the moon itself needs work. Comments please! I am a true beginner so please be kind. Constructive criticism very greatly welcomed. Thank you all!
