Urban sketching today.
Urban Sketchers of Southampton organised a day at the National Oceanography Ctr in Southampton Docks today. It was their open day - so many people, ideal for my style, were visiting. We had free reign within reason to wander, it was great. I deliberately chose a difficult aspect and view. The weather was dodgy and I didn't want to sketch a dockland scene, so in the cafe I ensconced myself with a view through the internal screen onto the indoor viewing area and the exterior windows, overlooking a huge car container ship. Lots of verticals and junctions in the structure + perspective, one of the sketchers sat out there and asked if he was in my way to which I answered perfect. With so many straight lines I used my brain, but didn't cheat and used a small book as a ruler with a 2B pencil, added colour and then a pen came in to tie it up. It was an excellent session and the chat and viewing was good fun and so very different.
About the Artist
Derek Snowdon
Eleventyeight as my hashing pals called my new age recently, it's supposed to sound better. Trying to paint every day in acrylics using only expired credit/debit cards, and partially succeeding as they're only for me and not show these days.
