nice one Denis keep up the good work

Agreed, lovely work Dennis, super colours, got to ask what on earth is Motiff #1?

Motiff #1? It is a red painted wooden hut on the quay in Rockport Harbour used by fishermen. It is supposed to be the most painted structure in the U S A , a favourite subject with American Artists. I hadn't heard of it before I visited Gloucester. Now I guess I just assume that everyone knows the place ............ But they don't!

Check out on Google - motif number one.

Beautiful hues and tones in this piece. I particularly like the lack of detail, less is more. I would not have included the electric light pole. A personal choice to include or exclude the pole, which may date your work if you so choose. Your artistic licence allows you what to include.Othewise it is perfect. cheers

What's wrong with the pole? It suits the composition perfectly in my opinion. Lovely use of colours. The whole thing creates a lovely atmosphere of autumn, and it's chill.

I like street furniture - telegraph poles, lights, telephone boxes, even litter bins can all enhance a painting. I remember being taken with this street light when I saw it sticking up amongst the trees so I included it. It was different to the lights we have here in the UK. I live in a part of the country which is very flat, intensively farmed, has few trees and I find that to include the leaning telegraph poles which seem to stand alongside almost every road, helps the picture. Mind you, if the poles were vertical and erect like soldiers, I would use artistic licence and paint them "on the slosh" Thank you Elizabeth and Gudrun, for your comments.

This is the last watercolour which I painted on my first visit to Cape Ann, Massachusetts 15 years ago. I painted it on the Headland at Rockport overlooking the small harbour and the famous Motiff #1 but of course I was looking the other way!

Denis Pickles

I’ve been drawing and painting for a long, long time. The first picture I have still in my possession is dated November 1939 and 83 years on I’m still at it! Keen on art at school and would have dearly liked a job with an art connection- I had hoped to get into architecture, but it did not happen.…
