Thank you both for your appreciation. Well spotted, Stephen. This started off as a "tree portrait" intending to capture the light effects on the trunk and branches but then I started "improving" the background for a better composition. The end result is a genuine tree painted on the spot but moved into a totally different location!

Thanks for all those positive comments, especially Satu's. I sometimes think it sounds pretentious to say I'm painting the light, not the trees etc. but when a viewer can tell that the weather is cold, it makes it all worthwhile.
