Thanks, Michael. That's just how it was. I found a dry spot to set up my easel but the large stump was then in line with the horizon, so I crouched down, took a digital photo then drew in the composition from the camera screen. Then I just painted the light, colours and tones on the adjusted composition. You're right, it's a wonderful area. The busy A12 runs along the embankment to the right of the church, just 100 yards from where I was painting but it could have been miles away, all I heard was the cries of gulls and waders.

I've just spent two wonderful February weeks in my second favourite painting area, the Suffolk coast around Southwold. The combination of winter light and colour with the timeless landscape subjects are really inspiring.
