Sometimes the supposed boring views turn out the best

Okay, I am assuming that you are after critique David. Firstly, there is nothing boring about drawing with a pencil, it is a vital and necessary discipline, and if the drawing is lacking in quality, design or whatever by adding colour won't make it interesting. There isn't much perspective as such in this one so I can't comment, but generally when constructing the elements for a composition you would rarely add fences in the foreground running across the page. Start adding some shadows to give it a three dimension, try carbon pencils, a 6B perhaps and give it some depth. Oh, and forget about those little tufts of grass, they don't help.

When improving observational skills this could be essential to remember, David, and some may disagree. When leading the viewer through a broad landscape try and find a way to lead their eyes into the background without any obstacles. Perhaps you could invent an opening...maybe the fence is broken and a few tufts of grass to suggest a way through to your focal point, which looks like the house in the distance. Nice clean work, David.

Thanks all, for these and the other critiques. Most helpful. PS Alan, I wasnt suggesting drawing per se was boring, just THIS one. D

That's good to hear David, drawing is the foundation for all us artists. You have chosen a rather bland view but keep at it, progress will follow and do think about the carbon pencils or charcoal sticks and maybe get some large sheets of sugar paper, an A2 board and let yourself go. Aim at perhaps producing a sketch every let's say 10minutes, you will loosen up and it will benefit your progress.

Yea get out that colour , it appears to be on Watercolour paper. So just mix one colour ...say indigo start at the back with lots of water and splodge it on. Those upright fence posts could be quite darl to give recession....but yes I agree ...it is boring.

This sketch I made sitting on the grass looking through a fence. I did it really only for the practice at perspective and relative scale: all observational techniques. It really needs colour I think, because as it is it is boring...mind you, the view is boring. Beautiful, but boring...nowt going on at all.
