The Letter by David Gilchrist
After studying the paintings of Johannes Vermeer, I wanted to attempt a modern version of one of the great artist's subjects. The girl in the painting is my oldest daughter Debbie. She had just received notification of her acceptance to attend University, so the timing of the subject matter was just right. I found that the actual painting process while working on this painting was "tighter" than my normal way of working. I normally prefer a more loose approach when applying paint. However, I've now completed a handfull of similar paintings and although they have worked out resonably well, I'll be happy to experiment a bit more and move in another direction.
