I know what you mean about using black. I tried it for a while but felt it deadened colours a bit. Having said that, I really liked your first version! I can see that this one has a fresher feel about it and appears more detailed as well. Either way, your work is excellent.

I keep looking at both of them, I can see the differences, I like the tones in both even though they are very different. They are both excellent and I still can't decide which I would prefer if given a choice.

Beautiful as usual Russell. The hair is exquisite and the pose so natural. I also like the textured effect of the background. I too have veered away from an overuse of black preferring a mix of ultramarine and burnt umber.

Superb as always! Interesting to compare the two versions. I like the warmth in the other portrait but agree this is cleaner, fresher and more realistic. I much prefer the background colour in this one.

I posted a version of this back in December using the Zorn palette but I was never fully convinced with the colours or the painting overall, I felt that using black 'dirtied' the colours somewhat. 50cm x 60cm oil
