Nuthatch by Colin Ayers
The Nuthatch painting is my interpretation of a piece of work completed by wildlife artist Basil Ede. I particularly like Basil's style of watercolour painting, combining both wildlife and botanical art. I used hot pressed paper (I usually use NOT), I found this worked very well for me using both watercolour and watercolour pencils. For the finer detail (plumage and small twigs) I used a small brush size 000 and at other times a fine point watercolour pencil and then running a damp brush over the mark. I also used white gouache for the lighter areas of the bird's plumage and to re-establish it next to darker tones.
