Staying at the Astoria Hotel in Mumbai on the last leg of our holiday, I went for an early morning walk and just past the Eros Cinema, sporting typical Bollywood imagery, I discovered the Oval Maidan, a huge (22 acres) public recreation area large enough to support six or more full size cricket pitches, all of which were in intensive use when I arrived, even though it was very early on a Tuesday morning. The games were good-natured but highly competitive, played mostly by teams in cricket flannels and players who obviously knew their way around bat and ball. The footpath I walked led across the narrow axis of the ground with games stretching out to left and right. This watercolour painting is from one of several photographs I took; a memorable sight.
