Add people? Change the light direction and make shadows darker? Change the time of day or the weather? But honestly why would you want to change it? Out of all the posts today this and one other really jumped out and spoke to me. I think it's lovely.

I'm not really that good for giving advice, but I guess the buildings themselves to me give the atmosphere in this like it is, it really is lovely. I only wish we had more of the villages and old buildings I see paintings off on this site here in Oz.

Perhaps by deepening the shadows a little? A solitary cat? But otherwise, it oozes simplicity - which is a character trait in itself. Delightful.

I have to agree with the above. A lovely painting. Really nice cobbles and the stonework on the houses. Other than possibly stronger shadow. Nothing more is needed. The sky is lovely too.

I am currently struggling with landscapes and how to make them lighter and brighter and if mine looked like this I would be more than happy! Maybe the shadows as everyone has said but other than that I think it is lovely. A quiet and peaceful scene. Well done.

Thanks to each of you for taking the trouble to give me your suggestions. I think they are all positive and inspiring. The point is that to consider other painters' views on our paintings may fill in some gaps in our own assessment and, therefore, can be beneficial. Bill Not a lot wrong with this painting but you seem to think it lacks atmostphere dont change it at all its a fine effort and offers a sleepy timeless view RJH

Like this a lot, would have been even better if you would have put people exiting the church or walking up the main street. But I know how you feel, I hate painting people!
