lovley painting xx

I like htese colours together and I rather like the rocks.

Wow Bill, this really is beautiful. I love the subject and this is a beautiful combination of colours. No need for a third colour to liven it up. Very well done!

Thanks folks! It's based on an Iceland scene, with a volcanic ash river-bed and cold-looking hills. I wish the technique matched the scene as well as the colours do! Much more practice needed..........

Excellent Bill, you're doing wonders with these challenges....I, on the other hand, still haven't thought of a subject for the first colour challenge!!Lol.

Such a variation of shades with just the two colours Bill. Very effective.

Thanks Fiona! But what I find rewarding is the fact that these are "just" challenges. I tend to get hugely bogged down with "serious" paintings (an interesting concept, since I'm as yet technically very very far from producing anything worthwhile: at least to other than family & friends!) It's given me a freedom to "just go for it". Also, it really has been "fun" - instead of interminable variations on a tightly-composed scene (which is what I usually do!) - these challenges have, to me, been a freedom to mess about. But also post the "messing about" result, because it might be interesting to others. No way would I do that with a development sketch for a "rubbish, but serious" painting. Also, darn good practice at something you wouldn't usually do!

Agree with Mia, this is really effective. Such harmony in the colours is perfect for the atmosphere of the scene : wild, cold and beautiful. Also agree entirely with your remarks regarding the challenges, it is so relaxing and liberating just to go with the flow, no self-pressure to "perform". And although I am passionate about painting and can't wait to get at it, the trepidation can cramp your approach and produce something far too tight.

A crack at Robert's Cobalt Blue + Mars Violet suggestion. Based on a photo my daughter took whilst helping with a glaciology field course there.
