A delightful intimate glimpse of a secluded stairway. I love the banister/railing shadows. What's the problem with the shade Avril?

Very inviting painting - the colour palette very suited to the age of the house; as to the shade - it works fine for the viewer, which is the important thing; you may well be able to identify areas in which you've not quite pulled off what you intended to, but so long as the rest of us don't know about those, we can only take the painting as it strikes us: and it strikes us well!

Thanks so much KIm, Carole,Debs and Seok for your encouraging comments. Both doors are in the shade and I always have trouble deciding how to produce darker colours! Are they just a much stronger mix of the sunny parts or should they be darkened a little by greying and the risk of making things look dirty! Small shadows have mauve/violet tint but can it be used for a whole wall in a cast shadow ? It all seems so difficult !

Many thanks Robert for such positive feedback! Each of us has little bits of paintings that seem to be crying out that it's not quite right but fortunately is rarely noticed by the viewer who sees it as a "whole".( No doubt this will read -quote/quote !) It's knowing what is acceptable !

I have somehow missed this gorgeous painting Avril! Very Mediterranean with yummy colours and very inviting stairs. I wouldn't dream of trying to draw them, looks so complicated. Shadows are difficult indeed but I don't see any problem here. I do mine with purple and raw umber but I'm not sure how it works with watercolours.
