The Brown Hat
Acrylic on cavas Size: 40 cm by 30 cm Here is the third in my Hat series. I used the same limited palette of complimentary colours as my Green Hat and Red Hat paintings i.e. Napthol Crimson, Permanent Sap Green and Titanium White. Influenced by Modigliani, I enjoyed creating these sorrowful eyed, rose-bud mouthed, swan necked women. The background a bold stripe. When I painted the chocolate brown next to the mint green it reminded me of delicious peppermint creams. Ive so enjoyed painting these women and their hats, I dont want to stop here and may continue to add some others when I feel inclined. It has been a learning curve using such a restricted palette, as I normally revel in using a rainbow of colour. You cannot hide in a hat; you will be noticed, especially by men. To men, you become a lady when you don a hat ... one who they rush to open doors for. To women, you become an inspiration, reminding them that they have a closet full of hats they have not had the courage to wear.
