This is great Annie - if I were painting this I would do it in waterclour and only hint at a background or even just use a graded wash - look forward to seeing how you tackle it - do post it when you have painted it

Substantial old chap! Did you go straight in with the pen, or map him out in pencil first? (I have a reason for asking; got to draw a Roman legionary, and am slightly nervous about how to proceed....).

Hi Michael, thanks for looking at this. I have some watercolour paints so could try them. I do not feel very confident with them but should experiment outside my comfort zone of acrylic. This might have to wait until all the Christmas cooking has been done, but I will definitely post it on here and on my blog which is: http://annibundance.blogspot.com Cheers ~ Anni

Hello Robert, Yes is is wonderfully rotund :) I did a very faint outline using a light graphite pencil so I had the proportions correct but is wasn't a very detailed outline. I like the black ink of the pen to tell the detail and that way I think sketches keep their energy and freshness. I am not too worried about the odd stray line which isn't perfect. It was a fine black liner Staedtler brand pen. When will you post your Roman legionary? Kind regards ~ Anni

Firstly I would like to mention I was inspired by a wonderful photograph taken by William Hallatt, who gave me his kind permission to use it as a reference picture. I found his haunting photograph irrestible and wanted to reproduce it in pen. Hopefully in time it will grow into a painting of this wonderful old guy. He was a Russian Captain and the photo reference was taken in Odessa. I need to work out the background yet. He reminds me a little of a worn out Father Christmas, minus the reindeer. A fine black pen was used for this on copy paper, no digital enhancement.
