A friend is moving house. She hasn’t room for her treasured dresser so she asked me to paint it so that, in a way, she is taking it with her. I agreed ( certainly a challenge) and have made a start. Photos and angles not great because you can’t swing a cat in that room ( not that I’d want to!). Lots more to do, the collection of china is vast…I’ll just pick out a few to pinpoint. Loads more shadows and light to paint in and at the end I’ll subdue lots of the image. I certainly couldn’t trace this one! Not that I’d want to. Almost 80cmx80cm oh, and I might extend that table to the right and may put a bottle of wine and a couple of glasses on the table to improve the composition. Artist’s licence!

The specs issue amuses me - I wear varifocals, so when I paint I turn my head in all sorts of directions in order to get things into focus: it must look ludicrous to anyone observing.... I did try taking my glasses off, like Rolf Harris advised (must be safe to mention him by now) but before I had my cataract op, I couldn't really see anything; and afterwards - it was a bit easier afterwards, and would be easier still if I had the other eye done. But I haven't, yet. So specs on.
Your painting looks great, and will be a welcome reminder OR an everlasting source of regret, as in, WHY did I get rid of it? I'd love a dresser, but not as much as I'd love the space to put it; which is, of course, the problem here. If I move again, I'd rather like to live in a castle: if anyone could help with this ambition, you know where to reply.

Sylvia, you’ve no idea re specs. I can never find them, I have new and old prescriptions lying around everywhere, any but the recent ones I want! Varifocals which I have to take off when I go down any stairs or inclines….anyway, thanks everyone for that encouragement because I’m very dubious about this painting. It has to be quite specific so she can take a walk down memory lane but I wish it were smaller( she wants a big one). I intend to paint over most of the pinkish undertone….another idea I had was to paint a small one too, zoning in on a few objects, a “ companion piece” if you like. Oh well, that’s my day sorted!

What a lovely idea, it looks great so far, looking forward to seeing the end result.
Like you, Marjorie I’ve two pairs of specs, one for reading and one for driving/watching tv, I can’t tolerate varifocals, they make me feel sick. I’m not precious with them, my husband despairs, they’re always splattered with something!
