Happy New Year to all. I started painting this scene and kept the photos of the stages as I like to look at then when away from the easel, I find this help and I pick out faults or areas to develop better. My reason for sharing as a work in progress are I like doing them, as and as I have throughout the last few months rediscovered my love of landscapes and painting them. I am not able to do my voluntary work as a ranger in the woodlands and miss been in amount the trees. That the selfish bit over I hope that in some small way this thread will encourage others to continue with their painting , drawing etc. I decided to use a landscape watercolour block I have and talked a boarder so that it  sat with the paper. I have not trimmed the view to give  a better idea of scale. Pencil used to draw the out lines of the major trees and branches.
I then added the base colours, Payne’s grey and Yellow ochre
I them added base colours to the trees, could not resist pick out a small plus added in the background trees.bit to do some detail.

Happy New Year to you Paul. I too have been struggling with inspiration, then watched a programme on wolves which I have decided to put on as work in progress. I like your approach to the woodland and I find masking tape around the border makes a nice crisp edge. Look forward to your next stage.
Great, I like work in progress.  I like the elongated format, and all is going well.  I shall watch with interest.
Many thanks Linda and Lew for the comments.  Started to add some detail to the tree branches using green on some as the atmosphere under the beech is often warmer that the open air temperature. The effect of the warmth is to encourage moss and lichen to grow from several feet away the tree look like the have had a fine green wash added to them. The other thing is the shapes trees these shown are old pollard trees, basically coppiced but done at a height so that deer and grazing cattle could not eat the regrowing branches and leaves. Most big beech in the area are 150- 200 years old the pollarded and coppiced can be three or four hundred years old, due to been cut and left to regenerate.  Close up of the area I’m detailing.
This is fabulous Paul.
Thank you Hilary. The next stage was to continue developing the trees,  this takes quite a bit of time again using green and some Payne’s grey as the trees have a grey tinge to them it’s almost a washed out grey. I have used  brown to add the odd dead branches, these are usually caused by grey squirrels eating the new bark they cause a lot of branches and trees to die when they eat the bard around as it stops  the nutrients etc. Sometime beech will drop branches including large one when under stress from lack of water or other atmospheric changes, the just literally fall off . This of course leads to a change in shapes and causes large holes and scars on the trunk sides.
This is coming on beautifully Paul, so interesting to watch it develop and to learn about how the trees grow. Your love of trees shines through.
It's always very interesting watching a WIP. Those watching learn about the process, especially inexperienced people like me. It's a wonderful scene Paul and all the extra facts are very interesting.
This is looking really good Dixie. Wonderful gnarly trees giving interesting negative spaces. You’re a quick worker!
Paul, I love your explanation of how you look after your trees, it shows in your painting just how much you love your woodland. I really like the way you have used the twisted branches at the front of your painting, it draws the eye across the page to the rest off the wood. It's coming along nicely, also I like your colour choices. I know there are lots of artists who don't like Paynes Grey but I have some in my wolf painting !!!
