I have absolutely no problems using photographs to develop paintings and think that anyone who uses them is in some very good company. If people want to limit themselves by denying the 'devils technology' I'm more than happy for them to do so, but I don't live on a flat earth. Cat and Fiddle pub and the mast viewed from the Buxton to Manchester road. Paint from the tube straight on to board Wipe with cloth and turps paper towel whatever you have Now use fingers and anything to animate the clouds I shall leave this to dry then start to add glazes another day
Spent many a happy hour up there training youngsters for the Duke of Edinburgh award looking forward to seen it develop.
Intrigued! Looking forward to seeing how this one comes along.
I use photos occasionally, together with sketches. I will look at the photo for about five minutes, then put it away, I then get what interested me in the picture and lose all the unnecessary bits. It’s a fabulous area, but when I’ve been to the cat & fiddle I’ve always been pre-occupied with keeping my motorbike on the road......scary but thrilling! Look forward to seeing the next stage.
Hi Fiona, I use pictures all the time, without a tinge of guilt. I always take my own photos so I consider it part of the composition, I put it on the screen I zoom in for detail, I combine photos and manipulate using software, and shock horror I use rulers and if I need to I trace. The confidence I have in my freehand drawing has greatly increased because of it. Its what they call bodily-kinaesthetics.  As a long time teacher of 'boys' kinaesthetic learning is 'wot we do best sir'.  I really don't know why people frown upon it so. As if being a Luddistic image purist is the way to continue art forward, I mean look at the crap thats going on currently in the far East and closer to home to see ultimately what blx that kind of mentality can be capable of. Anyway If your ever in the area on your bike let me know my  old Goose will chug along somewhere behind your supercharged sportster sulkily. It failed its MOT last week and Ive been rebuilding and bleeding  the brakes so it would pass. It's 40 years old in October and so will be MOT and tax free from then, typically Italian that it had a bit of a tantrum for its last official MOT a bit like me I suppose, only i'm waaaaay past 40 and more of a viking.
‘Luddistic image purist’ got a genuine LOL there 😁
Well there you go Justin.... “I m getting bored with “ each to their own”  but we all create and paint and enjoy in our own way.   my greatest joy has always been to sit out doors somewhere and sketch , take pics then use them for my next opus.  But circumstances and weather have reduced that to a minimum.   So I am using photographs taken by others when I am not inspired by any of my own.  I do have a BIG reservation as it’s not all my own work ,it’s someone else’s concept.   I’ve always used stuff on line or reference books to check detail . It would be daft not to.  Not sure why this has come up apart from being controversial  , as I said you do your thing ,I ll do mine..,scared of motor bikes though .
I'm all for l'aissez faire ... but not l'aisselle faire, which apparently is something to do with armpits.
I’m going to neither Google translate that, or look it up on Urban Dictionary. I’ll never get sick of each to their own...it does get tedious constantly seeing people berate your methods/style/materials/whatever.
Ant I find most people don’t berate on here .  I could if I wanted too.... but each to their own...yawn...
You’re right Sylvia, most don’t - but some tend to be quite vocal... Still, each to their own eh? 😁
Lol x
