I make my own, I really enjoy the process and they’re to a professional standard at a fraction of the cost. Particularly useful if you’re setting up a one man exhibition with 60 paintings that need framing! Light colours are prominent in the galleries currently, such as a simple Farrow & Ball hand painted frame with a white slip... simple and modern. For anyone interested, I’ve just concluded my four part series on Oil Painting Techniques & Materials in the current edition of The Artist, with a feature on making your own frames,  it’s well worth having a go.

Alan, I haven't had a chance to read the mag yet, I'll certainly be interested in the frames bit. We make simple box frames occasionally and I've found it interesting in the past to paint and wax my own frames. Yes, framing is very subjective, different styles and different subjects require different frames - or can " take" different frames. Black frames I like, for certain paintings. However, purely in my opinion, I'm not keen on the black frames around those very blue paintings of yours, Martin. I appreciate the old masters used a lot of dark frames, or gilt frames, and I like Still Life in wide dark frames but I also like simple modern frames.

Great Marjorie, I’m always here if you need any help with them. There’s not a lot of space in a four page article to cover everything - I didn’t have room to discuss the Farrow & Ball painted frames which are so fashionable at the moment. I don’t like black frames very much, perhaps for my small monoprints and drypoint etchings.  Gold is an absolute non-runner as it’s so unfashionable and has been for some years. Dark oaks and similar have also hit a low.
For sketches, charcoal studies, some prints, I like slim black or grey frames with a wide mount. Deep canvases can look good without a mount or a very slim floating frame. But sometimes, if I have a few hung together in a group I like a little variation in the frames, though they still have to complement each other. All personal choice.
Seems like I inadvertently started an interesting discussion on Martin's thread.  Didn't mean to hijack the subject! Thank you Martin, I take a great lot of notice of the comments you make as your paintings are brilliant and you clearly apply the same thought process to make the  best of them.  I can only learn from you.   Although I showed a gold frame this was because of the golden subject and I thought in this particular case it looked ok.  I suppose one of the things when people purchase paintings is that they have an idea where it will go in their house and look at both the subject and its colour and also the frame and ask themselves how it will all fit in.  For instance Donald Trump in his gilded Trump Tower flat would probably love the gold painting and gold frame whereas the gold frame wouldn't suit a modern estate house.   I personally have only sold a few framed automotive paintings and these have all been in cheap black frames which actually really suited them.  I have had frames from both The Range and end of line from Hobbycraft (£5 each!) but part of the reason for this is that I haven't charged much and 100% received has been passed on to a charity. Robert  you asked about the software for the frame - it was Paintshop Pro 7 that I purchased about 20 years ago.

Steve, I know you didn't meant to but I have been thinking about it all day and I'm really not happy that you did that to my picture. In fact i'm pretty fuming about it. No way did I think that when I put work up on this website, someone is going to put a frame around it like that. What makes you think you can do that to my work without consultation?  I am taking it down if I can. I can't bear to look at it or have my work seen in that light. I'm thinking twice about putting more work up to be honest. Martin

Wow, a really special painting.  I wanted to see how it would look in a gold frame and as (to my mind at least) I think it came out rather well I thought I'd share - hope you don't mind. Steve Andrews on 23/03/2021 19:49:08
Easy frame is worth a look.
