This is the second painting I have made in oil of the Golden Temple at Amritsar in India. It is 610 cms x 915 cms and is an oil on board, so it is quite large. In this showing you this work in progress I will take a different approach to usual by showing you the complete picture first and then I will go on to explain how it came about, some of the experiences I encountered in making the picture and will explain what is going one at several stages in the making of it. Hope you find this as enlightening to see as it was for me in doing it. Martin Taylor

Arriving at the temple I was overwhelmed by the sights and sounds. The main temple is situated in a large tank of water. All around is a marble walkway where you walk around and view the temple from every angle, there are tannoys constantly chanting prayers, the marble walkway is continually being washed down, there are hundreds of people. The complex operates for worship 24 hrs a day 365 days a year.

I settled down to try and paint a watercolour. It was not long before I was surrounded by hundreds of people, and they often stand in front of you and block the view. You smile and politely ask them to stand aside a bit, as if they cannot see what you are doing. Some boys sat down right next to me, and were constantly chatting and asking questions. Fun and good natured, but it is hard to concentrate when they are picking up your brushes, and laughing. It was not long before I had to move as guards wanted to wash down the marble.
I then had to either wait for it to dry or sit down on wet marble. Not long after settling down, with my crowd, I needed to stretch my legs from being crosslegged. Stretching my legs out immediately the guard told me off, as it is impolite to place your feet towards the gods.
