While this discussion is ongoing can I sneak a pic of mine in to Challenge ALL of you.  Sylvia Evans on 21/05/2022 12:59:38
Plenty of scope for simplification, I think. I 'might' try it.
Yay....
Might have a go Sylvia, though do have a lot on in more ways than one. On the mutual admiration thing: it's more true of Facebook than here - "It's fantastic, fabulous, just LOVE it" when applied to a work your spaniel could have done does leave me wondering if people are just blind, stupid, or owe the artist a favour: and that IS all over FB.  I've not noticed it here - I take it that when people say they like a piece, they mean it.   Certainly, I'll never give a criticism unless it's asked for, even by implication; won't say I love a work if I don't; and if I can't think of anything to say other than "very nice", I'll just click on Like, and add nothing at all.   There probably are websites that offer art-critic levels of analysis, but a site open to people of all levels of ability just shouldn't be one of them.  I think Michael notices the mutual admiration element because of the lack of its opposite - this may yield an occasionally cheesy impression of POL, but I think the balance is about right.  Most of us try to be encouraging - which all artists need - and preserve a diplomatic silence, or sometimes qualified praise for one aspect of a piece, when it's obviously missed the mark - whatever "the mark" really means.   I am, for the record, always open to criticism and won't be offended by it, whether I ask for it or not, unless of course you just hate me and wish to wound (oh, how could you?).  But I've been in politics for 50 years, and have a leathery hide in consequence.  I do realize that not everyone has this advantage - and wouldn't wish it on them, because it can also be a cause of callousness, philistinism. or indifference.
Not to mention gabby wordiness.........
Now there's a great name for a character.
Exactly what I meant Ellen. What's yer name ..."Gabby Wordiness ".  I bet some one is called that. Somewhere. Bet Lew draws  her .

There isn't one in London..checked.
Great photos, I'll have a go at them over the next couple of weeks. I've just finished a sunset sketch after reading Alan's article.I'll be trying out a few more.
Russel -  it seems to be a phrase that's stuck in my head but perhaps not the best turn of phrase and I don't mean to offend so I apologise if it does.  Without going into detail these streams leave me feeling a tad uncomfortable so I'm afraid I tend to avoid them but if others enjoy them then who am I...?     That aside I think Robert sums it up admirably.

Absolutely no need to apologise Michael, I certainly wasn't offended and thank you for responding.
Couldn't resist it.  I'll have to put it here...it would make no sense in the gallery.
Gosh I’m sure I recognise her, just didn’t know her name!
