Thank you Faye, Sylvia, Marjorie and Heather for your kind and encouraging comments. Robert thank you for your comment and the rest of what you wrote, I agree with you wholeheartedly good sir. I need to start on doing the horses main today and to be quite honest in dreading it . I like what I have done so far and have reach that stage that Robert alludes to re worried about spoiling it. The main of the horse who’s  photo I took is almost black , but I don’t want to use that as it had an almost maroon tint to it in the light . My fear is it will look flat and so wrong in colour. Oh what the hell ,up and onward I can only make a pigs ear of it to quote Robert. Thank you all again for your encouraging comments.
Well a deep breath and took the plunge , darkened the the mane a touch but not as dark as in reality. I will use the lighter colours as highlights when I detail the hair a bit more . Phew didn’t realise I wax holding my breath when I was painting it.  Not much more as I don’t want to overwork it , a bad habit I have to keep control of.  The next bit is a title  now there’s a thing I find difficult.
Looks gorgeous. Paul.  I can't tell if it needs to go darker from here, only you can see that.
A thought here Paul. Have you a printer? If so, take  a few prints on watercolour paper and then experiment with the dark tones. You won’t have spoiled the original and you won’t feel pressure.
Thank you Linda , I will only detail the mane in a slightly darker shade , I think having it very dark would look wrong.  Good idea Marjorie I would never have thought of that .
Good suggestion Marjorie, and it’s looking really good to me Dixie. You certainly have the structure of the horses head very well.
Paul I am really impressed!  You are currently definitely stepping out of your comfort zone with great results! It seems to me your new role has given you a desire to challenge yourself.
Thank you Tessa and Gillian your comments are very encouraging. One of the great thing’s about POL is the support and encouragement that we give to each other.  I told a friend that I worry when I do a W I P, that people may get bored of what I’m doing, and worse still think its a bit of showing off . I do them because it’s a challenge and makes me think about what in doing , I also hope it temps other to have a go. I’m not worried about making a fool of myself as I have spent a lifetime perfecting that.  Hope to be able to paint and finish it off later today .
Paul you are quite right about the support on POL.  It seems to be grown up people on here.  I recently had a dabble on Grayson’s Art Club on Facebook, only to find that I got criticised for making suggestions to make a portrait more accurate.  But I am not going to say anything is wonderful if is not. Looking forward to seeing the finished horse.
I do like this picture and in particular the character and look of the face and eyes.  To me, almost looks a bit sad and fed up does this horse!  Tired - that's the word I was looking for, but still with a bit of a smile!!

Well said Linda, I much rather someone saying something constructive and helpful , much better than destructive. Very perceptive of you Steve, the photo was taken at a local home stable, apparently the oldest horse there  . The sign on the stable door gave a name and said do not feed  / especially apples as it makes me windy , someone had crossed out windy and put fart. It did look very fed up .
Phew got there at last , I’m pleased with it, and learned a lot . It’s not perfect but it will  do , best  horse I’ve done .
