I don’t normally paint in bright colours I could not specifically say why it’s just how I paint . I was really impress by a article written by Alan Bickley about sunsets the article featured in The Artist and had some wonderful photos of the stage Alan took. I felt very inspired and wanted to do a what is for me bright sunset on a snowy scene but different to Alan’s . I used a photo I took several years ago and have painted as a spring scene, I hope you enjoy the stages .  Initial sketch , I like to have just a few lines to help keep everything in perspective  I rub out most of the pencil mark and have just the faint image . Once it’s on the board I add some base colours.
I unfortunately set the sun higher than I wanted but decided to go with it. I want it to look like that time of day when the sun is setting and it’s very much a dark and light mix neither one or the other .

Added some base colour to the tree trunks and a bit of white acrylic for the snow that’s blown and stuck to the bark. Aldo added the background scene . It’s  At this stage that I start to wonder if if made a mistake starting it . What I call the ugly stage from now on it’s trying to bring it together and make it look something.
It’s fine Paul, stop having doubts and be positive! You’re working methodically in layers, it will come together…
Moved on a lot but still not complete, it’s a bit darker that I originally wanted but having looked at I a couple of times I’m starting to like it a bit ,. Thank you Alan as you see it’s coming along nicely I think.

You’ve achieved a rather good winter atmosphere here… I would probably bring that left hand tree down a bit, well quite a bit actually!
That was the next thing to do Alan as I haven’t finished on the left side yet , you have confirmed my thoughts on that area.  It’s quite sparse on that side in reality but aesthetically it doesn’t look right in the painting, definitely time for a little artistic license I think .
I was so far from my comfort zone I need a life belt doing this . I think it’s finished the risk is that I will fiddle with it so it time to do a AB and sit on it for a day or so .
I wouldn't fiddle with this one - really all you could do would be to enhance the tonal contrast a bit, i.e. some stronger darks in the trunks of the trees.  But what would happen to that gentle atmosphere you've created if you did?  Try that in a new painting, maybe, but this one is finished, in my opinion.
It’s done! Get it photographed outside, and cropped of course, then onto the gallery! It’s rather good…
Totally agree with Alan DON’T fiddle it’s done! Also Alan’s tree suggestion was spot on. A great success Paul!
