A 23x36 cm watercolour painting of a rusting old Chevy truck. After WW2 there were thousands of these old truck  surplus to requirements. Many were shipped to Australia, Africa and New Zealand for the farmers to us as they were tough basic vehicles and easy to repair. There are still many around in the outback no longer used just rusting away , some are still running. I  enjoy painting these old  vehicles, particularly when I in a bit of a rut and don’t know what I want to paint, doing these and old ships seem to help me focus and get the enthusiasm back.  Whilst I’ve started with a pencil sketch, I tend to ignore them to get the vehicle looking better, but retain the actual shapes etc. I thing I do it this way out of habit and it does help to focus on the details and overall structure.  Initial drawing with a dollop of pain as I realised I hadn’t taken the initial photo . I really enjoy doing WIP as I keeps me on track and keeps me working on the painting.
Added some colour surprising how it soon comes into shape . Need to think about a suitable background scene but leaving the truck as the focal point.

How about some heavy (dark-ish) and out of focus vegetation?.. Good chance to have value contrast, organic to geometric truck shapes contrast, as well as colour opposites to the red, making it pop off the canvas. Plus an atmosphere of 'long since retired' truck?

Just a suggestion, here, Dixie. When you have finished the truck take a picture of it, print it out, cut out your lovely van and place it in front of various pictures in books or magazines, or hold it up against different landscapes around you. It will give you ideas for tonal values and the background you like. I think this would look good with an industrial unit as a background. Nice work.
It's coming together beautifully Paul; lots of colour in there! Look forward to seeing the finished article; God bless
Thank you Garry and Carol for your suggestions for the background I will keep them in mind . Thank you Andrew hope to get a bit more done today.
There always is some warm feeling while we looking at old vehicles, boats, air planes etc... Your art is gonna compliment the warmth for sure!
I like the out of focus vegetation idea, because the greens will help to complement the red (orange-red, burnt sienna or whatever you've used); also, make a photostat and playing with different backgrounds - another good idea.  Much better than committing yourself to a colour scheme too early, then deciding you don't like it - which I'm sure most of us will have done.

....ooh, how about a seascape, and the truck's on the sanddunes....a chance to have brilliant/vibrant colour to contrast, again, but this time with a nod to it's prime source of rust, and a slight mysterious air of "why was it left there"? (bit of a back story for the viewer to absorb into)
Good thought!
I haven’t done much in the way of painting this last week due to other commitments and not feeling enthusiastic.  I thought about the suggestions for the background and decided that I would go with a Northern Australian outback scene ,my reason is a lot of these ex military vehicles were used in the outback on farms and construction sites etc. Lots of the abandoned vehicles can be found throughout Australian bush and in both New Zealand and Africa. I will finish the truck details when I have completed the background.
Good explanation, and choice.
