Here is a 1950's street scene in southern Philadelphia. Fantastic street houses, cars and of course a streetcar. Glorious architecture. This is the starting sketch.

Malcom I am full of curiosity, ,so much amazing detail you must have the patience of a saint.  We all work in so many different ways , mine is a bull in a China shop.    How do you get all that wonderful detail ?

Hello Tanja, it's watercolour. I find it's such a versatile medium and works well on this type of work. As to the level of detail I think it's bordering on OCD as I just can't seem to stop myself!!!

Hi Sylvia, there is many a time when I wish I could just stop and do something much more 'of the moment' and more loose (which I am going to have a go at this summer, especially having just watched David Bellamy at Patchings). As to the detail I do a lot of research beforehand, books, photos etc and try to get these period scenes right. It's then a fair amount of time and patience to get the drawing part done. Having said that I have always been a bit of a detail 'junkie' so am used to it. TBH the fun part for me is the actual painting.
