I will be trying them out Saturday Malcolm. I purchased them as I read they have more of a translucent quality than that, supplied for the Western Market. I wonder do you find the Russian watercolours translucent. I can't wait to try them out and in keeping with the traditional Chinese brushwork I've been learning myself recently.

Hello Denise, I look forward to hearing what you think of them when you have had a 'play' with them. The Russian watercolours I find very flexible, giving great density when needed and are translucent when thinned down. They give a great colour whichever way they are used. Malcolm
I too will be really interested to see what you do with your new watercolours and brush(es) - I used to use the Guitar brand of Japanese watercolours, but I've never yet used real Chinese or Japanese watercolour/ink brushes, other than the Hake.  You tempt me to have a go, although I know I'll never master the fluidity of the Asian masters. Also fascinated by those buffalo/bison and how you're going to make them work against that Turneresque background.  No pressure then, just because everyone's watching and waiting...
You never know until you have a go Robert. It's all about trying. We will never master the masters but they are the icons in art that we try to understand and learn from. As for my painting, when it's finally complete I intend putting a green glaze over the whole thing.
I'm loving how this is progressing Denise and will be really interested to see how a green glaze works over your lovely colours.
I love the warm colours and orange glow. I look forward to seeing the finished work.
Thank you Sandra and Bill. I can't say how the glaze will work out, it could ruin the whole thing completely but when I was looking at it the other day, I could visualise it in my head and decided then, I was putting a green glaze over, once finished. If it ends up a mess, so be it but I'm determined, that's my plan.
I tried out the Japanese watercolours today using both ink and watercolour on rice paper. I like the creamy texture they seem to possess and although I'm still finding it very difficult to work on rice paper, I do intend trying them on watercolour paper sometime this week. I was very happy with the brush and used the one brush for everything. I didn't intend doing such a large painting, this ended up being two and a half foot by one foot, so I did enjoy using them. The rice paper is so delicate and I did put a hole in the figure. Oh yes, I'll be back to my oil painting tomorrow.

Looks really good Denise .
Today I have put the detail on the buffalo. The Buffalo is a group I observed on the local Safari park and was able to use my own photos. I'll let it dry and take another look in a couple of days. I'm always undecided about a painting and will be looking forward to seeing what a glaze makes of it, once finished. I have a lot photos as it was a big group but here are the two I used for this.

The painting is looking superb Denise and your reference photos are really good.
Today, I've been working on the lower part of the painting. I'm not happy with it and will be making some slight changes. I did put a green glaze over the sky. I used Sap Green with a dot of Vandyke brown and used Liquin to make the glaze. Here are two pictures where I have just started to apply the glaze and another as the sky has been completely covered. I am happy with the decision I made regarding the green glaze and I will be applying a deeper glaze of the same colours once finished.
