I sketched this out and did some base colours , whilst showing it to a friend I mentioned maybe doing it as a WIP with her encouragement here it is
The scene is developed from a few online photos of the old stream ferry from Hong Kong to Macau in the 1960s. It was scrapped not long after the photos were taken and replaced by a high speed hydrofoil. Needless to say the hydrofoils don’t have the same charm and mystique about them that these old steam ferries did. I’ve added a distance shot to give the idea of what it looks like from a few feet away . Watercolour paint paper cut to size and typical I have forgotten the measurements will add them later .

Lot to be said for old slow and steady , well unless it was rough seas . Modernisation is alway for the better it was nice in the 60/70 with the old ferries beating up and down the waterfront. It was a must do for the tourists and a need do for people living there quite olde world feel to it at the time or is that just nostalgia kicking in . That you Denise , Linda and Sylvia for you comments. A bit more colour added and some more detailing , I working slow today as the gas boiler had died , my hand as painful due to the cold was supposed to have the engineer at eleven .

Thanks Katy. Develop a bit more and starts to deal with the small boats that are in reality small sampans with hoops cover in canvas etc. I was always amazed the people , whole families lived in them with absolute minimal basic living conditions.
From the painting point it not to easy to make them look like canvas covered boats as silly as it might sound, I’m sure it will develop as we go along( fingers crossed ). Again a close view and one further back .

Thank you Frank I mostly paint in watercolour, very rare in acrylic and never in oils . Some more details done , have painful hands today so not doing to much , I have done the cables and ropes in pencil for know but will change that later . The ferry is just about done focus now on the small living boats in the foreground . I hard to be.I’ve that people were born and grew up in these tiny boats , apparently children learn to swim before they can walk, good idea if you live on the water. The size is 24x36 cm on 310 g/m2 watercolour paper .)
