I think I can`t really comment on an artist`s work unless I know it - I`ve not seen any of the YBA stuff. Is it exhibited publicly? All I know of it is what I`ve read in the Press. However - Henry Moore, Turner, Whistler etc. - all were greeted with a chorus of derision at first. I think time is the best leveller. I`m sure Freud`s work will still be commented on in a hundred years because this painting evokes a very strong response. But if you go round galleries, you`ll also see the ones who turned out crowd-pleasers and pot-boilers. And these pale into insignificance beside the greater works.
Hi Clairandaisy it seems that the Lucian Freud work hangs in the Art Gallery of Western Australia so I'm the only one able to view...all of Tutors classes are going to on a junket in September and I asked Tutor about it today...he said we will just pass anything distasteful to some of the members...but I said I wanted to see it, in fact I'm under starters orders to see it...so I really hope it's on show...I for one will call the gallery to see if it's on show...If it is I shall crow of course (lol) (lol)
What does your Tutor mean..... anything didtasteful!  Exactly what we have been discussing.  Why dont you print off this thread and get all of your group involved.  Your tutor may get a suprise.  Back to "in the eye of the beholder"
It seems that even art tutors can be offended by some paintings....... They should have grown a thick skin by now.
I told him in no uncertain terms that I wanted to view the work and he smiled...I don't think it's him but some of the people in the class...some would swoon I think...but I just know that my friend Eileen who is in her 80's would love it...she has a wicked sense of humour and did remark that Tutor had a nice bum on our first day...this of course sent us both into silent giggles we were standing right behind him...now the question is does he have a nice bum...not bad for an old guy...I think many of the people who are enrolled although, artists in the sense of the classes they attend but not in the world of art if that makes sense...I will phone the gallery tomorrow and find out if it is on show and where and if not why not...gee I'm getting brave in my old age...to tell you the truth I'm really looking forward to seeing this painting in the flesh as it were...I googled him and I really like his work...there is a smashing work of a large lady sleeping...it's good to see other than the nubile and buff in 20th century art...will be back with info tomorrow
When we did life drawing at art school, the best models were the `interesting` ones. The most difficult were the slim young ladies because their bodies were featureless. You can get very excited by the way an old skin falls against the frame of the body, or the swell of a generous belly. I suppose portraits are the same. Back on topic - I love the legs in this painting - the strength of them - all knobbly and curved at the same time.
Hi Rob thanks for that link I shall have a look...I don't think the art of Lucian Freud is anything new the statue of David which Aqua posted is after all a male nude...perhaps prettier but a male nude just the same. Hi Clairandaisy unfortunately we never had the pleasure of a good large woman or man in the 80's...most of our models seem to be young students or young mothers supplementing their income...when I found out how much they got an hour I nearly stripped off myself...I was nursing at the time and they were earning four times more than me an hour
Start a group of your own... I did 14 years ago and its still going strong. get different models, different every week, keeps interest alive. Old, young, male, female, fat, thin...they are out there, contact local art schools they will have a list , advertise, its amazing who will take of their gear for £12.00 per hour which seems to be the going rate up here.
Well Rob you missed out there didn't you...I've never seen a lap dancer but the male strippers my Daughter rakes up for hen nights are a bit of alright...trouble is most of them are gay but very buff...I could put a photo up of me putting baby oil on the last ones leg but I'm shocked myself so wouldn't want to shock you...they pick on us oldies. Models get a heap over here always have...trouble is you only get them at the Universities or Colleges now (lol) (lol)
Pheewww! What a long, diverse thread. To go back to the beginning, my thoughts on the rat are compositional; Blue! hee! hee! ho, hum! um.. er.. if you repeat shapes, it is said to add to the impact of the picture. My thoughts on Tracey pertain to her tent too, Jed! I would not sniff at it, if I were on a cold, wet hillside with no other shelter within a ten mile radius and you must be able to guess that I've bin there!! :-S I might take down the notices about her ex-partners for added room. This message was entered in the spirit of jocularity, although I do realize it might be perceived as slightly glib. It is not meant to offend a soul! :-S I'd like to say a special hello to Patsy, Jed and Mel and anyone else who knows me! Please come back or don't leave. I love you! (wow, i bet THAT made your days! :D )
The picture; how the crack in the plaster captures my wandering eye, leading it down the chaise longue onto the main figure. The face to me doesn't show much emotion - almost as though the model is daydreaming - perhaps trying to distract the mind from the ticklish rat tail. My favourite part is the base cushion, it is so silky and inviting, shabby chic !  but then my taste is for subtle rather than strong forms. And what a pleasant change to see realistically proportioned genitals, which from the leg posture must surely be the intended pièce de resistence, however much it disturbs our neuroticisms.
How did he manage to keep that rat still while the painting took place ?  I wonder if it was a dead one?
