"I do think a lot of art criticism & history is a complete pile of old socks....." Oh very well said Robert! ROLOL I've thought that for such a long time. Wasn't going to comment on this one at all but since I'm here I think it's horrible, so gaunt and unpleasant. I hate the colour and feel he's making some sort of point about redheads but for the life of me I can't think what but certainly not a favourable one. Looks to me like he's out of his head on drugs. If he set out to make people think, it certainly does that but I can't think of anyone who would want to own it. Now Michaelangelo's David on the other hand is just beautiful but a very romanticised view.
Artists have not always used the female nude for all its beauty.Picasso has caused uproar when he had an exhibition of paintings only showing the genitals of his partner !At the time he did not need to make a name for himself.
Now we have got onto shock value through the ages......... I think this picture of Damien Hursts really took the biscuit. Sorry have been trying to download his Sheep in Fomaldhyde which is pretty nasty.I could not post it for whatever reason.  I was just tring to show some more shock value.
Agree with this statement clairedaisy.
Another artist for discussion? Why not Artemisia Gentileschi. A female artist that had a pretty torrid time AND pushed some real boundaries - the male dominated artist community (and the church). She painted strong women and what was worse at the time, women that had dominance over men. Should this be a separate thread?
Just come back from two weeks away..........looks like this was a good subject to get involved in ;-) So what do you think of Tracey Emins work then?
Not a lot.
Not a lot either.....
I think a lot of so called art, is just media hype, rather than the intrinsic quailty of the work. I daresay if Constable submitted "The Haywain" to the RA today I bet it wouldn't make the Summer Exhibition.
David Hockney has painted many of his male friends in many stages of emotion but somehow it didn't evoke the discussion that a painting such as this has...for me I think it's a wonderful piece of art given the discussion that it has generated...that can't be a bad thing...if perhaps we look at it as a piece of art and not a sexual statement...I admit that this is the first time I have seen his work and admit to looking over it a few times to try to come to grips with the emotion portrayed...as an X red head it made me feel good for someone to paint a redhead in these modern times...because it's a colour of hair regardless of the hue that people feel they must say "Oh you are a redhead!!!"...WHY...I am now happily faded...I would also like to add that as a person with a spinal fusion and a very sore back that is one of the positions I would take in order to release some nerve pain...try it if you have a bad back it works!!!! :D :D :D
When I use my laptop I rest it on the book, "The Complete Paintings of Manet." why? it's just the right size and has a lovely cardboard cover which does not smell when the heat from the laptop gets to it...because of this habit of mine I can give you some of the reaction to Olympia...and I quote in part. This work was entered for the 1865 Salon, causing much tumult and shouting. Indeed towards the last few days, it had to be re-positioned at a height where it would escape both notice and attack. (Bazire) The mob crowds around M. Manet's rotting Olympia as if they were at the morgue. Art which has sunk so low is not worthy even of censure. (Paul de Saint Victor PR 1865) end part quote. So in all of this nothing has really changed on the opinion of art that may shock at a particular time in history
Me again, I think this is a fantastic thread which has really livened up the Forum and generated great discussion...for me I would love it to keep going...when I learn how to post I will find something to add
