Morning all - in response to some queries on my latest hideously badly photographed Gallery post. Easy bits first: I would not normally use three different lead whites in one painting; the only reason I did so was to experiment with the textures of them.  The Flemish White (from Rublev) is rather more syrupy than my Cremnitz (from Michael Harding); the Stack lead, of which I have a very limited quantity, was made by a one-time contributor here who went by the name of TimeToBe - I wanted a paint that had plenty of body, which would enable me to enhance the lighter areas.  I also wanted to experiment with it.  It's good paint, but I think I could have achieved much the same result, if rather cooler, with Titanium White.  Lead whites have several qualities which make them attractive: one, they're warmer than T. White; two, they dry MUCH faster; three, all too many T Whites also contain a quantity of Zinc, which I try to avoid; and three, they make a strong paint layer, much stronger than T White. Now to the camera question: Alan B asked if I'd followed his recommendation about a new one, and the answer is no, because I was given another.  But - I was a twit to suppose it would be any better than the old one, because it's the same make, just a more recent model.  And I must and will follow my leader and get a different camera - i.e. the one that Alan advised in the first place.  I blush for shame.
It’s time now for that new camera… no more holding back… your last photo did not do your painting justice… let me know if you can’t recall the one that I suggested! I still have the details saved in my head! It’s not expensive. Experimenting! I assumed that was why you used all three, I accept that, and why not! I have one lead white which I bought online, you gave me the contact details… Cremintz I think without checking - I would love to try stack lead white, I’ve read about it but it’s not available anywhere, banned from production I believe. Didn’t know you had some!
The camera I use is on my iPad and it gives excellent results.  I seem to remember your PC was playing up.   Re con I pads...maybe?
Alan, your recommendation is still on the Forum, and I'll look it out.  Sylvia, half my trouble here is havering between a camera and an Ipad - if I were in a burning building, I'd be stuck between jumping out of a window or taking a deep breath and going through the smoke to where I know there's a doorway.  So I should of course emerge as a singed heap of former person....
I’m not saying that the recommendation I made is the best camera on the market, but it’s one that I had some time ago and it gave me pretty good results - certainly adequate for the internet which deal in lo-res images as most of us know, and it was at a reasonable price. I believe it was a Canon, but you have the info to refer back to, maybe a Nikon… I’m using a Nikon DSLR because I need hi-res jpegs for the magazine, that’s the only reason I bought it! But they come with a hefty price tag! Yes, iPhones and iPads have good cameras in the main for internet use, I’ve got an iPhone, but be prepared to lash out in excess of a grand…

Like Sylvia, I use an iPad which takes excellent photos - can be loaded up to a website in seconds - and has so many other uses as well.  Mine’s an iPad Air3 64GB, bought it last year for around £400, so not hugely expensive. Wouldn’t be without it.

I have a couple of camera thst I love to use for taking photos but I don’t use it for my paintings as I’ve found my iPad does everything I need it to do. The benefit is that the image is on the iPad  where it can be cropped etc then it’s just a case of uploading. My cameras do take a better photo but I would expect that from a dedicated camera, the iPad camera is really quite adequate for everyday photos etc, like Alan if I was producing photos for the magazines I would use my camera.  The benefit Robert is it’s a computer so you can access the internet, email and all the other thing you do . I would hate being without mine now thst I have used one .
T'was a Nikon, Alan, I've found the post and will order it this afternoon, when I've located where a Christmas Amazon voucher is.... as for the Ipad: oy, the expense!  £400 not unduly expensive, Jenny?  You don't know the miserly, tight-fisted old sod you're dealing with! I have long accepted that I'm odd - I have a reasonably large amount, by my standards, of disposable and available income saved; and the more I've saved, the more reluctant I am to spend....  I'll happily spend £60 or more on one tube of paint... but expenditure on technical things just seems to grate on my finer sensibilities like a cat's claws scraping glass.   I know, I know, I need therapy, seeing to, a visit from the van with men in white coats and a soothing manner ...  "Mean as tongs" was my late landlady's description of me: oh, she'd a cruel tongue......
Oddity on oddity - I've just spent more on cigars than I'll be spending on the camera: you're dealing with a total, complete, nit-witted nut here.
Thank you for the 'whites' information Robert, I am just out from work so won't get time to have a good read until later! Looking forward to seeing what you all have to say about cameras too!
It may sound relatively expensive, Robert, but an iPad is probably better value for money than a camera - you’d get far more use from an iPad.  Bet you’d end up using it every day - as Paul says, once you’ve had one you’d hate to be without it - and they’re so easy to use, as well as being portable.

I agree. I gave up on desktop computers a few years ago when the last one died, and love my iPad and iPhone. Wouldn’t trade them. I have a good camera but I rarely use it as it’s quite heavy to lug about, while my phone goes in my pocket.
