One I sketched out earlier this morning using my Ackerman pump pen - loosely based on a Rembrandt sketch but with a lot of my own input.  Around A4 on Jackson’s Kraft paper, using traditional handmade inks, courtesy of Fiona! More on these inks and how they’re made in a forthcoming Studio Plus feature via Dawn.
Such super drawings....now I am about to lower the tone...Sheep on The Razz .  This took me about 15 mins Shteep are a simple shape...round and curly. Living in a very rural area animals often vacate their fields  cows, sheep, horses ..not seen a pig yet .These three were spotted by a motorist who photographed them then put them on the community page with where he had seen them.  So I nicked his photograph as they look so happy making their freedom bid.  Just a marker pen my dip pen is old and scratchy. We had a herd of cows invading the back garden at three one morning...Four of us in PJs shooing them out.  D

Sheep are a simple shape - now try saying that twenty times on the trot?  Sheep are a simple shape - seep are a shimple seep - no, soup are a simple shlurp; shloops are a sheeple simp.....  Once you've mastered that, on you go to - should shoe selling shops shut smartly at six, should shoe shops shut smartly at six.   HOURS of fun! Splendid sheep backsides, and Alan - another wonderful sketch before Sylvia "lowered the tone": except Sylvia is wonderful, and couldn't lower the tone if she tried.  (Mind you, she DID try - mischief, thy name is Sylvia). Alan - are you using white gouache, ink, pastel, conté or A.N. Other here?  And why is it that Rembrandt era sketches of cottages &c look so cosy, when they probably weren't.... they just look so... rounded, domesticated, part of the landscape...  without I hope diverging too much from the theme: it seems to me that buildings then, composed as they were of the materials to hand, which didn't include pre-formed concrete to start with, looked so much more in tune with the landscape than modern architecture, whose proponents seem to hate, despise, and wish to defy the natural shape of the land, preferring to erect hideous buildings which alienate themselves from it aggressively: a monument to the grandiosity of the "artistic" architect, in whom art is an entirely alien concept. As in "my name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; look upon my works ye mighty, and despair": when all his works lay in ruins...
Robert, thank you that’s appreciated! As it was tinted paper (Jackson’s Stonehenge Kraft), I took the opportunity to drop in just a few carefully positioned highlights using a square stick of white Conte chalk. - highlights give most drawings another dimension I always find… The Rembrandt drawing that I used as a general reference for these 17th century cottages, looked as though the roof material was a mix of thatch and general lichen, moss included here… So yes, they certainly fit in with their surroundings! Probably hellishly damp at a guess!

Superb line and wash Alan.  Inspired by Sylvia’s sheep, this is from a photo of a Cotswold sheep sculpture spotted this week. Fude pen with Tombow 992.
