Carol - donkey's years ago, I used to look deep into the flames of our old coal-fired boiler, and saw trees, faces, landscapes.... I'm sure my mum thought I was mad. But then - she couldn't pass running water - looking down from a bridge, looking into the swirls and eddies, it was all she could do to stop herself jumping in (which would have been a mistake, since she swam like a brick). Movement, plus light - especially flickering light - can create images in our brains; I was quite, and am now very mildly, epileptic (they still won't let me drive, probably wisely): this all makes far more sense to me than it might to some.

Carol and Robert like you I have often seen shapes in the fire and in the bark of trees etc . When I worked in Mental Health Day Care I attended a course with a well know art therapist and a psychiatrist we talked about people seeing thing in fire , trees , patterns on curtains etc , both said it had nothing to do with mental health issues and more often than not it was people who were artistic who noticed it the most. I actually find it quit comforting noticing shapes and patterns it’s also provided inspiration occasionally. So I count my self in good company along with you and others who have the same experiences and long may we continue to notice .

Yes it can be very distracting and I bet disturbing for some people. We had a cracked tile in the kitchen that looked like a eye staring at you soon removed it after moving in . In the living room there is a stone wall and when my youngest daughter was small we used to look for thinks in the stone shapes and colours.

Once you see something ( like Robert’s knife) you can’t “unsee” it. I was once asked to paint white material draped in folds on a table for friends of my brother ( a commission). I was quite pleased with the result until my brother mentioned he could see what seemed like a body as if in a shroud. Well, after that, it was all I saw. We kept quiet and hoped the recipients hadn’t seen the same thing.

Its lovely if its something that changes like fire or clouds, or something like textured paper. Sometimes I see them in something I'm stuck with like my bathroom tiles, then my eyes go straight back to the face each time I'm in there, I wish I could unsee it.oh Collette, I have the exact same “mishap”; bathroom tiles. Unfortunately, all the tiles look exactly the same, so I see what I'm not allowed to say out loud (and don't want to think about it all the time) 100 times over... I have to close my eyes in the bathroom... hehe
