It’s great to see so many contributions and all so varied Lew thanks for introducing your doodle idea sketches  and  scribble sketching that you use . Like Alan says it’s great to see the bare bones of the painting. I have been to a secondhand book sale today
The word 'sketch' seems quite elastic in it's interpretation,  I have a number of good quality sketchbooks that allow me to produce what are effectively finished drawings.  Because they're in my sketchbooks I tend to think of them as sketches.  (Robert did an interesting thread on this subject).  But for me, my real sketches are those in my 'scribble' sketchbooks.   They are a kind of visual shorthand to get ideas down.  I often get ideas, but if they don't get scribbled down they are forgotten. None of this matters, of course.  Sketches, drawings, studies...whatever you call them, show them. Some months back, I scribbled an idea about Frenchmen playing boule.  Here it is... ...I liked the idea, but did nothing about it.  Sometime later, while wondering what to paint, I looked through my scribble book, saw this, and decided to give it a go.  As I was having a wobbly hand day (it varies), I decided to change the layout and go in much closer on the three men playing boule.  I find drawing larger, and slower, enables me to do something even with wobbly hands.  Here's the finished pic, I posted it some time ago.  You'll see things have been changed, but my initial scribble sketch provided to impetus for this picture. However, some of these scribbled ideas sit in the sketchbook so long that I forget what the idea was...sketch or not.  Here's one... As I always want to illustrate things, I'd probably read some myth or legend.  From what's happening in the sketch it might be something about the north wind blowing...dunno...but the human brain being what it is, one day I might look at it and know.

It’s interesting to note that I’m not the only one to have scribbled pages of ideas , I look a them sometimes and think if anyone was to see these they would think a child had done them on bad day . I can honestly say that 99% never get beyond that point, seemed like a good idea at the time , but it often sparks another idea that gets either left , more developed , turned int a good drawing or painted up. I will look through them again and see what I can find might be something half decent lurking in there somewhere.

Another one of mine, straight in with pen and ink. This is how I've mostly always worked. Ive got very little imagination so usually sketch and paint things that I can see.
Great to see  lots of sketches etc posted and also the chat about sketching is really interesting . I would say we all seem to use our sketching in various ways so not a waste of time! I will post my sketch this afternoon
This is a quick watercolour sketch based on my original plein air oil sketch. I wanted to take another look at the horse and rider.
Same sheep, different day. Promise I’ll think of something else tomorrow!
A lot of good sketches.  Did you do a kelpie picture Jenny?  It’s a subject that interests me, but I never got round to doing anything.
Double post.  Sausage fingers.

This is my ink sketch I've just done with a Chinese brush. It is really difficult on rice paper because the ink just wants to spread like wild fire. The ears, head decoration and earrings needed to be kept unspoiled. I plan to paint it tomorrow using my Japanese watercolours. The hair style is from the Song Dynasty.
Just completed this in my landscape sketch pad , an idea for a winter scene watercolour in the coming months.
