Nah….lol Diane.   Count the people 🌻  The person looking backwards is a red herring.

Sylvia, I am sure this can't be true and I may well have miscounted the number of people, but a political journalist once wrote a book titled '50 People who (rude word) Up Britain'.  You'll have to look up the works of Quentin Letts for the full title! Equally shocking afterthought......50 Shades of Grey!

I love the visual pun. I never read any of the "Grey" books, nor have I seen the movies.
Another…..mid fifties and  the the Authors last name begins with S   Sorry if I am writing Gobbledygook gook, eyes not good today.   So frustrating.
Sylvia - The image is Great, but maybe a bit too vague for me. The first thing that popped up was "On the beach". How about "Lord of the flies". Anyway, this challenge is a real pleasure And as such, here is another that should be Easy...
Robert Louis Stevenson?  Treasure Island (not that I can see an island...)  He's the only writer about the sea and shore I can think of whose name begins with S.
Sand Pebbles?
Sylvia, is it Blue Horizon by Wilbur Smith?   On second thoughts, don’t think it can be, that was written much later than the fifties.

I agree with Skylar, Sylvia’s might be “on the Beach” by Nevil Shute. For Skylars latest how about “Roots” by Alex Haley

Sylvia, thankfully the painting and the other clues rule out the Marquis de Sade, otherwise I might have started to worry about your reading list.  My guess would be 'On the Beach', Nevil Shute. PS....and no I haven't read 50 Shades of Grey, or de Sade for that matter  I started 50 Shades but gave up in Chapter one before I even got to the naughty bits. I suspect  Skylar's is 'To Kill a Mockingbird'.
