Thanks Fiona, Lew & Tessa. It's just a shame I have to share - I'm sure my wife's half is bigger than mine :). It occasionally feels cramped when you try to step back to view your work and back into a chair, but there's a small patio out front that comes in handy in the better weather as I can throw open the bifold doors and plonk my easel out there.
Tessa, that book looks very good. Maybe you'd like to review it and have it in the book reviews or blog section ;)

My "studio" is the back bedroom. Lots of space and storage BUT a steady stream of visiting grand children means that I am forever having to clear the decks (or desk) or they will finish off what I have started. This means I often misplace things...like a beautiful box of Unison pastels that I bought myself on a visit to there production place...far too nice to call a factory. I have spent months turning out cupboards and drawers but no joy.

John. A great working space despite the disadvantages. Alan's is similar to my working space, great if you're working relatively small scale. I've often thought it would be great to attempt something large scale. I'd have to scour the local farms for something like John's converted barn. But then, what would I do with a massive painting? I guess, somehow, we all find the space for our needs.

As I was promoted to the spare room yesterday I now have space to leave things out. Much improved as the dining table was not the best place but warm in winter. I normal paint in the shed, but like me it getting old and doesn’t like the damp and cold, I will still use it for storage of bulk painting stuff, and to paint in the warmer weather. For storage in the spare room in using an under bed plastic container for pads etc. Bought the table top and legs from Ikea, £16, 15 minutes to put together, size 100x60 cm, about the same area I used in the dinning room, but it’s all mine.

well done on your promotion Dixie, always nice to keep your on going projects out. love your painting on your board. I suppose I'm lucky in a way, my photo shows my main work space, but I have also completed paintings in my work shed, this is where I have a mini gallery of some paintings that have not quite made it into the house, or have been replaced, it is also where I cut mounts and make all my picture frames, for my paintings and my wife's completed cross-stitch. I Have been known to make frames for all sorts of things for other people..

A really interesting thread. I was banned from using oils in the house so it gave me a good excuse for putting up studio in the garden! Insulated and double glazed for the winter but during sunny weather it got a bit hot so I built a canopy/pagola in front. A very pleasant place to use all year round and if I ever give up the painting then it will make a excellent summerhouse.
