All this proves the impossibility of selecting just ONE artist.  I have huge admiration for all the artists featured so far.  It’s interesting to see the different ‘takes’ on the subject.  Such skilful work.
An impossible question indeed as no single artist captures all the nuances of everything around us.  But I would give some serious thought to Alfred Sisley.
When I started the thread I had given it a lot of thought beforehand and I’m not surprised that you are  finding it difficult to choose one single artist , I pick Monsted simply because it’s his work that inspired me when I first started painting.  He is still the top of my list as I have always been a big fan of landscapes and trees he does both in a spectacular way, there are other landscape artists that I admire and would put up there in the top list one who paints n s very different way is Alwyn Crawshaw. We could all fill a page of artist we admire who paint other subjects or in a very different style y list would include several artist from within the POL community. As Peter  said earlier we are all different thank goodness for that, it’s the variety of styles , skills, choice of subjects etc that make this site so interesting .
I like Alan's choice very much
Oh my word, what a question Paul. Caravaggio has to be my overall best because of his complete shift in painting style of the time and the introduction of chiaroscuro and tenebrism. Vereer and Sargent would also be amongst my favourite portrait and figure artists. As for landscape, I like all the examples shown. My favourite landscape artist is Ivan Shishkin. 1832-1898. Pine Tree 1894 Oak Grove 1887 Pine Forest 1895 Birch and Pocks Study. 1878. The Birch and Pocks Study,  it could have been painted today.
Paul you're doing a great job with finding interesting threads for the Forum. Very hard question, we all like so many different artists. I decided to go for a reasonably modern landscape artist, Stephen Quiller. I like his slightly different take on landscapes, and his use of colour.
Someone once asked me, if I died and could come back as any artist, who would it be? I immediately replied Eric Ravilious. I have learned so much trying to emulate his dry brush techniques and simplification of style in watercolour painting. Here are a few of his to share:  I love the precision of his work. The brickwork in this one is insane.

Eric Ravillious is also one of my favourites and has a very distinct style.  It might have been easier if we had been asked to choose a top ten of artists, but then we might be here for a year!
Sandra, I like your choice of artist - the first and last egs especially. Ravilious is certainly very distinct and there are shades of Hockney in them too ( Hockney has so many techniques).
Another of my favourites… John Piper RA, what wonderful illustrative work. Art for me is about putting your own take on a subject, not simply copying what you see, a camera is far better - he certainly does that!
Piper’s work in Coventry Cathedral is marvellous. But the scope of JSSargent is breathtaking for me. From a young age his mother made him paint or draw every day. We’ve all seen his marvellous society portraits but here are just a few different topics.
An artist that very different form my first choice but whose work I just love John Blockley
