When I started the thread I had given it a lot of thought beforehand and I’m not surprised that you are finding it difficult to choose one single artist , I pick Monsted simply because it’s his work that inspired me when I first started painting.
He is still the top of my list as I have always been a big fan of landscapes and trees he does both in a spectacular way, there are other landscape artists that I admire and would put up there in the top list one who paints n s very different way is Alwyn Crawshaw. We could all fill a page of artist we admire who paint other subjects or in a very different style y list would include several artist from within the POL community. As Peter said earlier we are all different thank goodness for that, it’s the variety of styles , skills, choice of subjects etc that make this site so interesting .

Oh my word, what a question Paul. Caravaggio has to be my overall best because of his complete shift in painting style of the time and the introduction of chiaroscuro and tenebrism. Vereer and Sargent would also be amongst my favourite portrait and figure artists. As for landscape, I like all the examples shown. My favourite landscape artist is Ivan Shishkin. 1832-1898.
Pine Tree 1894
Oak Grove 1887
Pine Forest 1895
Birch and Pocks Study. 1878.
The Birch and Pocks Study, it could have been painted today.

Someone once asked me, if I died and could come back as any artist, who would it be? I immediately replied Eric Ravilious. I have learned so much trying to emulate his dry brush techniques and simplification of style in watercolour painting.
Here are a few of his to share:
I love the precision of his work. The brickwork in this one is insane.
