Gillian...don’t be shy sketching out doors.  I know just what you mean but most people treat you a bit like a leper. Though in these times of social distancing you should be quite safe, look up and growl at them.....” Where’s your mask? “ . Comment to me ...” Ah , you are an artist ? So is my aunt . But she’s good “ .    The ones I do enjoy are the little kids who think you are wonderful , I usually give them some paper and crayons and get them to have a go along side me.  I have been known to step backwards with my size 4 s onto the heavy breathers toes.  But mostly people ignore you...maybe it’s the set of horns I wear.

Love the aunt comment Sylvia! I’ve also had some beauties also over the years... I could fill a book with them! It can be a bit daunting at first Gill, that’s quite natural - but it may help if you have a friend to join you on your sketching trips.  Most of all, have confidence in your own drawing abilities, you’ll almost certainly be a hundred times better at drawing than the person commenting. The two magazines can be a great source of inspiration, certainly you’ve made a positive step by subscribing to the LP.
Go for it Gillian, the first will be the hardest, but you’ll gain so much from it. Most people are very unobservant and probably don’t even notice Sylvia’s horns! It’s also a lot easier to whip out a small sketch book than set up all your painting gear, that does require nerve if you’re in a busy area.
I will certainly have a go soon, thanks for the advice and wee push! It’s so hot here at the moment it needs to be early in the day or In the evening! If the latter, doused in mosquito repellant! Thinking about it evening may be more interesting as the old folk sit out in the street to chat although depends on whether they are still avoiding people! We shall see!
I'm not lucky enough to live anywhere with immediate access to anything I'd even want to paint so, yes, I mostly use photographs, some found, some my own. It's not ideal but still useful and provides a good source for practice. Oh, and there's also the cats 🙀
Nothing is hard and fast Jim and we all do things differently.  Why not !.  I have beautifully scenery all around me...plus next doors wicked cats ( that’s me being polite) .

I have beautiful scenery where I live too.... trouble is I don't like painting scenery! I don't mind if it's mostly buildings, but trees, shrubs, flora, fauna etc I just can't paint. I admire anyone that can and does though.

Hello Sylvia I also sometimes find it difficult to get inspired and find subjects to paint. I live in a town and I have 2 school age children so I don't tend to have a lot of time in the week to seek out beautiful places to paint! I also don't drive and in the current situation, it's even more difficult! I know this is frowned upon by some, but to be honest if you don't have gorgeous countryside or coast on your doorstep, how else will you find subjects to work from? Hence I work from photos that I've either taken myself, I also ask friends and family for photos of places that I've not visited and I use copyright free photographs to work from from websites like Pixabay. There are thousands of subjects and wonderful places to look at - these are obviously for reference, a starting point, to give inspiration when you're not able to get about and about!
A lot of people who for whatever reason cannot get out and about use photos, I use them when painting old ships, trucks etc. I think it’s better to use them for inspiration and for reference etc, than to not be able to do anything other that imagine scenes. Don’t be hard on yourself of be over worried about it, just put your own stamp on whatever you are looking at.
