I have been a great admirer of Trevor Chamberlain's work, especially his watercolours for quite a few years, and decided to put a message on the Wapping Artists contact page saying exactly this.  To my amazement, he got his son to send an email back to me thanking me.  It was quite touching and I feel a bit humbled that a painter of that stature would do that. Mind you, the first thing I read was "from Richard Chamberlain" and just for a second I couldn't work out why or how a dead actor was emailing me!
It’s always a nice surprise when someone well respected replies. I once e mailed Mike Barr who is an Australian artist who writes in The Artist magazine. It was because he had painted the Quayside in Newcastle ( near where I live). Got a lovely email back. Robert Brindley always thanks you for a comment. And why not, really? Nice people. There are some who don’t bother at all, it reflects badly on them I think.
Artists are all lovely people, we know that!!
Referring to the POL Gallery I agree with Marjorie about thanking people who comment, and always make a point of it. I know that Marjorie does too, along with most but not all POL artists. What I do wonder is, do those artists who don't acknowledge comments actually even look at them? Is it a waste of time commenting? Just wondering.
I’ve stopped commenting on post as the artist never responds and I’ve never seen them comment on anyone’s art. It’s ignorant and disrespectful to the people who take time to look and comment .
I do the same Dixie. I haven’t posted a lot of work in 2025 but breathe a sigh of relief when anyone comments, and always respond.
We're all different. I only comment on a picture that really impresses me but I will never post a negative or nasty comment about anyone's work. If it doesn't impress me I just don't say anything. For my work I read every comment and appreciate every one but I don't feel the need to respond to them all; if you've commented I know you've looked at my picture and that's good enough for me. If I comment on someone else's picture I don't expect them to respond to my comment; I know they'll have read it which is enough for me. As I say, we're all different.
One of my reasons for joining this group, was to interact with other artists.  Something I miss
One of my reasons for joining this group, was to interact with other artists.  Something I have missed when I stopped art classes. So, I will never leave a negative or nasty comment, and I will try harder to comment more often.  It isn't a matter of not being bothered but more the typing.  I have arthritis in both hands and although holding a paintbrush is still okay,(thank you injections) using a keyboard has it's moments.

I always try to say thank you whenever someone leaves a comment.  But I don’t often leave comments on other artists work, because it takes me so long to write anything (owing to a stroke).  I do however often tick the ‘like’ button and think it’s a shame that we are not able to view who has ‘liked’ a painting on this site. I’m a massive fan of David Curtis’ work and sent him message once, which he replied to promptly.
I agree with Paul as I have commented on newer people that come in many, many times, very rare to get a reply. I don’t expect a comment in return, but commenting is being part of the community. Without the good community core here at POL the site would be lifeless. So thank you all who are part of the POL community.👍
You put your finger on it exactly John - if no one comments it’s not a community. Little conversations here and there make it more personal.
